hidden hunger is a micronutrient deficiency common among young Filipino children and women of reproductive age. it is the lack of vitamin A, iron and iodine. i tend to believe it is prevalent because a law was passed for the mandatory fortification of rice with iron, the flour, refined sugar and cooking oil with with vitamin A and salt with iodine. food products with the Sangkap Pinoy seals are examples of fortified foods.

Hidden Hunger is the result of eating food that is cheap and filling but lacks the essential vitamins and minerals needed by the body. It is prevalent in Third World countries, including the Philippines.

Especially with the prevailing poverty, poor families resort to eating rice, noodles, and other "filling" food to make thyem feel "busog" (translation : full). They are naturally unable to complement their food list with fruits, vegetables, meat, and all those things we learned in school being described as Balanced Diet.
