Here's the thing. A BMW is a status symbol. It says to the rest of the world that you have worked hard and chosen to reward yourself with the ultimate driving machine.

The cheapest possible BMW right now is about $33,000. That's before you add an automatic transmission, leather seats, and some other cool features. At that point you are looking at $40,000, which is probably more than the average person in your small town makes in a year of hard work. This same car also has 230 HP. So if you are thinking a new car, it's far too powerful and far too expensive for a 15 year old driver.

Now you could be talking about an older car, and it's possible to get an older, cheaper, slower BMW. But even then I don't think it is an especially smart choice. A first car should be fairly small, reliable, easy to drive. Something like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Something that won't cost a fortune when you have your first ding.

Quite honestly, telling us that your dream car is a BMW and therefore you want one, does make you sound like a spoiled brat. When I was 15 I too dreamed of Porsche and Audi and other exotic sporty cars. But guess what? I WAS 15!!! You can't expect to simply have lots of cool stuff just given to you when you are still a child. Why do you think you deserve it? What do you have left to work for in life? A BMW is something that you work for years to be able to afford. Not something you give to a spoiled teen brat.

I think that driving a BMW will make others believe that you are a spoiled brat. And the first time you crash it because you are far too inexperienced to handle a car like that, they will laugh at you. Some of the people that choose to be friends with you will do so just because of what you have, not who you are, and that's just sad.

I think that your parents are making completely the wrong decision in even considering such a car. If you want to see where this road ends, take a look at Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. This is exactly what happens to spoiled little brats. So if that's what your parents want for you, they should go out and buy you a brand new BMW.

If you were my daughter, I would teach you how to use a spell checker and tell you that nice cars and other expensive items are things you have to earn yourself though hard work. But clearly your parents lack some parenting skills, or you wouldn't even be asking this question.

I'm 17 and I drive a BMW. It's my 2nd car, my first one was a Volkswagen Jetta and I didn't really like it. Anyway, BMWs are really nice and I love mine. I do get called spoiled because people assume my 'rents bought it for me, even though I paid for it myself. It was only 10,000 bucks because it's a '97, but people think it's newer because it's in perfect condition. What model are you thinking about getting? I would not recommed that you get a Z3 or Z4 just because they are so little and impractical. If you get in an accident you're screwed. Mine is a 740i, which is BMWs big car, and it's really safe but not exactly "cute" or "sporty-looking." Since you're a girl, you would probably be suited well with a 323i or 325i from the late 90s/early 200s. I hope your parents don't buy you a new one. That would be stupid on their part because no teenager deserves that nice of a car and there is a big chance that you'll wreck it anyway.
Long story short, BMWs are cool and fun to drive...but you will be called a brat. People just get jealous and frustrated like that. Don't get a new one unless your dad is really rich.

Wow, ZCT! You hit the nail right on the head (thumbs up from me on that one!)

Everything that he stated is true. A 15 year old should not have a BMW as their first car, unless of course it is a few years old. Driving around a brand new car at this age just looks ridiculous. Will it be a jealousy thing with some people? I'm sure it will be. But then there will be others who will look at you AND your parents and think "What the hell are they thinking?"

Just because you have the money to buy it doesn't mean that you should.

My mother and father in law are very well off. They both drive a Lexus. When their daughter (my sister in law) turned 17 and got her license, she got a Dodge Neon. It was a nice car to have as her first car, but it wasn't overboard and ridiculous.

Just watch the TV show "My Super Sweet 16". I just want to slap all of those girls AND their parents. They think that they can just get whatever they want, and never have to work for it. And that is not the way it should be.

I wouldn't call you a brat, just unrealistic. A BMW, while a very nice car, is the most expensive car there is to maintain. The parts are only obtainable through the BMW dealers and cost an arm and a leg for everything. I even had to go to the dealer for a battery as no else carried it and it cost twice what my truck battery did. Further, the BMW's have service lights which turn red when the computer figures it's time for service. The dealer won't reset them unless you have all the items they list taken care of. Their maintenance requirements will bankrupt you and if you don't have the items taken care of your warranty is void. That's why I no longer drive BMW's. They're fine if you have deep pockets or, in your case, a dad with deep pockets.

Don't get a BMW for your first car.... Maybe try something more modest and slightly more resilient especially if you are a new driver. Don't lose track of eventually owning a Bimmer, but it would be better to start driving in another vehicle. However, maybe you can push for a college graduation present when that time comes.... keeping in mind that a 328i is roughly $37000 +/- with options.

yea, they will probably be some people who are going to call you a brat. if i was you, wait till you graduate high school to get the bmw. you will then be a more expierenced driver. your first few years of driving you are going to get a few scratches, dents and dings in your car. you wouldnt want to ruin such a beautiful car such as a BMW, wait a few year, you will be happy you did! happy birthday and good luck

in the beginning, provide us info: what style of BMW, what style of Mercedes? searching for a saloon, sedan or coupe/cabriolet? considering the fact that I particularly have owned a BMW (additionally as my first automobile) i could be somewhat biased, yet i could % the BMW for styling (of course subjective), the main appropriate stability of sportiness and convenience (ordinary greater suited chasis) and the plenty greater suited engines. on the 2d my p.c.. of the line could be a 328i sedan, 128i coupe or X1 28i (or in the event that they have diesel interior the U.S. by now, I did % a diesel over the petrol variations, 30d or 25d). whilst are u getting the automobile? reason i does not decrease the choice to BMW/Mercedes. possessing a Jaguar now i can assert i could purchase it back any day over any BMW or Mercedes. could be properly worth waiting for the recent X-type successor. Jaguar actually has something the two others lack. undying type and sweetness. Even in 10 years from now u can look at them and that they nevertheless will look superb

lots of kids drive BMW,s and jaguars, these days, the thing to remember ,the car doesn't make you who you are,be your self and your friends will still like you, having a nice car doesn't mean you will loose friends,or make any enemies,it just means you will have a ride, and a nice one at that ,if you don't want the BMW,have them look at other cars with you, good luck with it.
