i have a seagate free agent desktop 250 g, how long can i keep it plugged into the comp b4 i should take it out?

It should be "as long as you like", otherwise most people would consider it a poorly designed HD with a cooling problem.
Make sure you do not obstruct any vents and do not leave it in heat sources (suns, heaters, etc)

Until it burns out which would take years, hopefully, to happen. Turning the power switch off when you don't need it is really the main way to save the lifespan of it.

They're designed so you can keep them connected as long as you want...
