alright, I know Helen is from Sparta and that the Spartan King goes to Troy for her.. but what's the timeline of when Troy was supposed to have happened and when the battle of Thermopaplye (sorry if its bad spelling) happened (aka 300)??

and i'm just spitballing here, but could the Spartan king who fought in Troy be related to King Leonidas of 300?? I'm just wondering because i am unsure of how kings and queens were appointed in Sparta.

The most famous Spartan Kings are Menelaos, Leonidas, Pausanias, and Agesilaus. Menelaos, though not Dorian and probably more mythological than historical, helped lead the Greek forces that besieged Troy. He was considered a fierce fight but a calm headed man.
Leonidas inspired the rest of Greece by fighting to the death against the Persian invaders at Thermopylae. He was an old man by the time he was struck down along with his famous brave 300, and his moral impact on Greece would perhaps keep the Greeks fighting throughout the rest of the Persian Wars.

Ancient Greeks thought the Trojan War to be a historical event. They believed that it took place in the 13th or 12th century BC, and that Troy was located in the vicinity of the Dardanelles, which is in modern day Turkey. By modern times both the war and the city were widely believed to be non-historical. In 1870, however, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated a site in this area which he believed was Troy; this identification is now almost universally accepted.

Some archaeologists and historians maintain that none of the events in Homer's works are historical. Others accept that there may be a foundation of historical events in the Homeric stories, but say that in the absence of independent evidence it is not possible to separate fact from myth in the stories.

The Battle of Thermopylae however is a historical event that took place at 480 BC. The combined Greek force included 300 Spartans and 4,900 additional heavy infantry of other Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war.

Actually Troy was destroyed at the end of a ten year war 1174 BC - 1184 BC .The Battle of Thermopylae occurred much later in 480 BC. And no, those kings couldnt have been related.
Sparta's war with Persia at the Pass of Thermopylae lasted for some 3 years; not 2 or 3 days as supposed by some. The Persians found it immpossible to break through the defenses of the Spartans and it was'nt until they were betrayed and a secret passage through the mountains was shown.

Troy is 1200 BCE, 300 is 480 BCE.

If anything Leonidas is related to that Spartan King

more than 500 years passed from the Trojan War to the Persian Invasion of Greece! The Trojan War, if there really was such a war, was fought during the Bronze Age, while the latter War, historical I might add, was fought in the Iron Age! And more than just the 300 Spartans fought in the last battle! Sparta had more than one king at a time! Two at a time was their norm!

A lot of the story of Helen of Troy is mythology. Helen was supposedly the daughter of the god Zeus and the mortal woman Leda; she was adopted by the king of Sparta, Tyndareus. Her husband Menelaus became king when Tyndareus died.

The actual battle of the Trojan war took place sometime around 1190 BC ... the battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC, seven hundred years later.

Highly unlikely,I don't know if Menelaus was related to Leonidas but Leonidas ruled around 480 B.C. and Troy was sacked by the Greeks around 1180 B.C.(those dates are very close).

troy? long long long LONG before leonidas was even born. leonidas time was far nearer the time of alexander the great and a united greece. troy was when the greek city-states still fought constantly.

troy = greek on greek. before it was a unified empire. 300 is greek v persian as it would be for some time to come, into alexander's time

ps : don't you just love how no one else actually answered the question?

The Battle of Thermopylae took place at 480 BC. The events of the Illiad (the Trojan Wars of horse fame) are believed to have taken place at 1200 BC plus or minus one hundred years or so. So ... very unlikely any relation. The Trojan Wars are unconfirmed, may all be myth.

Thermoplyae was nearly 1000 years later. It's possible that Leonidas was related to Menelaus.
