once you strike out you can not go to first unless the batter swings and misses and the catcher fails to hold on to the pitch. when this happens the batter can try to make it to first before being thrown out. which they usually are thrown out.

If a third strike is not caught by the catcher (and is not tipped), it is a strikeout, and the at-bat is over. However, with first base open or with two outs, the batter is not out until tagged out or forced out. On a wild pitch or passed ball the batter can often advance to first base safely. If a runner is at first base and there are less than two outs, the batter is automatically out, as with the infield fly rule. If there are two outs, another runner may be forced out as with any other ball in play. If the runner reaches first base safely, there is no out, but the pitcher is still credited with a strikeout. It is thus possible for a pitcher to throw four (or more) strikeouts in an inning.

They don't, but if the catcher misses or does not catch the ball which is the third strike the batter has to be tagged out or thrown out at first That is the only time a batter will go to first after being struck out.

It happened last Wednesday. The Angels catcher dropped strike three and Red Sox centerfielder Coco Crisp ended up on first base after beating the throw. His turned out to be the go ahead run.

If the catcher drops the ball, the runner can advance to 1st.

The catcher has to throw the runner out at 1st to record the strikeout.

This rule has been in place since the early 1900's

That only happens if the ball hits the dirt on the first strike. For some reason baseball has a rule that they should be able to try to get to first base before the catcher can grab the ball and throw it to first. I think the rule is pretty ridiculous.

it's only allowed if the catcher fails to hang on to the ball after the third strike is called/swung at

if you're new to baseball, then i think your mistaking 4 balls and a walk with 3 strikes. If he throws 4 balls(not strikes) then the batter gets a walk.
