1999 war games predicted problems in Iraq
Exercise showed that chaos was possible even with 400,000 troops
WASHINGTON - The U.S. government conducted a series of secret war games in 1999 that anticipated an invasion of Iraq would require 400,000 troops, and even then chaos might ensue.
In its “Desert Crossing” games, 70 military, diplomatic and intelligence officials assumed the high troop levels would be needed to keep order, seal borders and take care of other security needs.
“The conventional wisdom is the U.S. mistake in Iraq was not enough troops,” said Thomas Blanton, the archive’s director. “But the Desert Crossing war game in 1999 suggests we would have ended up with a failed state even with 400,000 troops on the ground.”

Bush supporters are not the kind of people that think for themselves, so if they were told to be proud of this, they would be proud.

This is getting so old.

The fact is that 90+% of the country supported going to Iraq at the time.

After time they realized that maybe it wasn't the right course of action, but guess what???? It was too late we were already committed to the war.

If we pull out now that country will fall even farther down the tubes and even more people will die, and then all of you will be complaining that we didn't do enough for them.

Like it or not we are there until we get some sort of foundation in that country, no amount of complaining is going to change that fact. DEAL WITH IT!!!!

Bush has done an excellent job with what he has had to work with.

What I want to know is why did Congress adjourn for a month without approving the funding that our troops need right NOW. They have left them insufficiently protected.

Bush may have made some mistakes, but they certainly weren't intentional and vengeful oversights committed without regard for our troops' safety.

What is at issue here is that our troops really should not have gone into Iraq. Everyone seems to forget that Osama Bin Laden has NOT been located or captured yet. Yet our dear President finds it necessary to defeat Al Qaeda is to remain in Iraq.

When the Dems threaten to end the funding for the "war", Bush throws a tantrum like a 5 year old and Nancy Pelosi gives in and gives Bush whatever the hell he wants.

Whether we like it or not, our Constitution was set up for civilians to control the military. The President doesn't have to take their advice. I don't always agree with Bush, but I certainly approve of the Constitution.

God - don't tell Dubya this. He will just read it as "400k aren't enough - no problem we'll send 500k - now don't criticize me for another year to see if my new surge works - no I am not going to define in advance how we will know if it worked"
