They went down there every once in a while. Played at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. I'm pretty sure it was just to see how things would work. Montreal being a miserable franchise was used as the goat in the process.

Montreal To Puerto Rico

They played 22 games in Puerto Rico in 2004. The reason being that the franchise was not making money in Montreal and attendance was low. MLB wanted to move the Expos to another city, so they wanted to see if an MLB Team could make it in a latinamerican market, and the San Juan season was a success.

Before making the move, the Expos were planning to move to San Juan, PR; Monterrey, Mexico or Washington D.C.

D.C. was chosen because primarily because of its central location since the there were rumors that the players were getting tired of the longer hours due to travel to Puerto Rico; and also because they secured a new stadium in D.C.

The Expos ended up playing 22 games in 2003 in Puerto Rico and played there again in 2004. The effort was to see if Major League Baseball could be sustained in Puerto Rico, including whether travel for opposing teams and the home team was managable in addition to a potential fan base. The effort in 2003 actually gave the Expos 1,000,000 for the first time since 1997 (wikipedia). In short, $ was the reason MLB did it due to the fact that the Expos sucked at making it on their own.

In their last two seasons as the Expos, they played a portion of their home games (around 20 or so, IIRC) in Puerto Rico. I'm not sure what you're asking by "how did they play in Puerto Rico" - they flew there, went to the stadium, and put on their uniforms.

Ask MLB. They owned the team at the time and screwed some of the greatest fans MLB had.

It made sense as that 1994 strike killed the Expos who were the best team in baseball then. After that, the fans just never forgave MLB.

Never heard of them playing in Puerto Rico. Weird because the Blue Jays play in Toronto.

It was before MLB moved them to Washington D.C. and renamed them the Nationals. Only 1 season, I think.
