When you find Top Dead Center for No.1 cylinder as other posters have kindly answered, also check your distributor. Take the cap loose, ease it over to the side, OUT of the way of the spinning rotor, and see if you can turn the rotor by hand. Sometimes the brass gear on the bottom of the distributor shaft has it's teeth worn off, or the roll pin is sheared.

Pull the No. 1 plug and hold your thumb on the hole while someone cranks (eases) the engine over. When it pops your thumb off the hole then No.1 is up on compression stroke. Might take a few tries to get it stopped right there with No.1 on compression. If the timing HASN'T jumped then the timing marks on the harmonic balancer should be lined up with the stationary mark on the pointer. If the timing marks are at the bottom or back on the other sde somewhere then it's probably jumped.

timing light or they are marks on the bottom pulley and a guide on the left side of motor have a friend bump the motor til they line up then take the rotor cap off and see if the rotor is pointing to number one plug wire which would be the wire looking left of where you are standing the first one setting would be around zero to two marks above is close to it anyway
