My top choices are rats, aquatic turtles, and ball pythons. They're all pretty cool. But, it depends what you want.
If you want an affectionate intelligent pet, go with rats. I used to have a small colony of them, and they're very sweet. Their cages can get smelly pretty fast, though.
Turtles and pythons are a little less friendly, but very cool. I love watching my turtle chase guppies around his tank. He's pretty quick under water. Turtles are a major commitment, though. They can live 30 to 50 years. It's a long term pet.
A ball python would be the lowest maintenence in my experience (Once you get a good habitat set up.), they don't do much except lay on your shoulder and ride around when outside their habitat, and they are very easy to feed and clean up after. Plus, they are very docile and easygoing.

cats are simple, easy, cheap and can be left for a wk, bout only pet that can be.
ferrets are cool, but do have a musky smell, can become mean, tend to bite at times, can be known to tear things up.
squirrels are cool if you get it as a baby and feed it from being young. but they can be squirrely (snicker) and mess things up, full of energy. and normally by 3 they need to be let go due to mating.
I've always like the savannahs or margay cats. Its a wild tree cat from S.America that is crossed w/ a full bred bengal house cat, then cross bred again w/ another bengal. You end up with a cat the size, looks of the wild one but the personality of the house cat. Such beautiful cats: http://www.junglemtnexotics.com/pics-july/39.jpg
A fish tank can be cool, specially if its a 45 gallon or more and you go brackish or salt water. Takes more effort than normal water fish but is rewarding.
If you have the room, a horse is always cool, plus you can ride it.

Dogs are loyal and all but not the pet you want if your gone alot. But my idea would be to have a cat because they are independent. You give them food and water and play with them and thats all they need really. But you can give them more im just sayn'.Cats are the type of pet that are able to take care of them self so i think a cat would be the best.
Hope I Helped!

P.S. You also have to change there litter box stuff and its alot easier than pickin' up dog poop.!.

I think you are going about your search in the wrong way ... kind of recklessly figuring out what to adopt. Don't forget you are talking about the care of a living thing ...
Why don't you consider your living arrangements, budget and time constraints first and then once you have that narrowed down, figure out what kind of pet you will adopt.
There are way too many pets that are either euthanized at animal shelters or set free without the tools to fend for themselves because folks just impulsively "tried out a puppy or kitten", for example, and afterwords decided it wasn't quite their cup of tea.

I don't know if its really a good pet or not, but my grandma said when she was little she used to have a flying squirrel, really. She`d tie them her belt loop and keep it in her pocket
she said it was fun to play with. of course i don`t know where you would get a flying squirrel but it sounded like a cool pet. :]

Go to a local shelter and get a poodle mix. That is a STRANGE dog...but with poodle fur, no shedding, less allergies...lots of love!
