No, John Travolta was hot, hot, hot those days...no one like him...it probably wouldn't have been as successful.

He was hot in the tv series Welcome Back Kotter, and had just taken off with his other movies (Saturday Night Fever) although I'm not sure which movies came first...I suppose the guy from Dirty Dancing (Patrick Swayze) might have pulled it off.

Considering the fact that Travolta was taking over that part from the number of guys that have played Danny on stage (and the number of actors who have since gone on to play Danny in the years since), I'd say any of them. Also, Jeff Conaway, who played Kinickie, played Danny on stage, and he could've played that part. Travolta was just in the right place and the right time.

I would love to see the movie remade, but using the Broadway script more, and have actors who are more age appropriate.

From The Outsiders only Patrick Swayze could have done it, he can sing and dance beautifully.
But I love John as Danny Zucko.

The thing about many many early movies such as Grease is that directors and screen writers usually teamed up to make a role precisely for a certain actor. James Dean for example, all his movies were kind of FOR him, and him only. Its due to the fact of the actors personality how its so particularly amusing and unique they derive a character for it, perfect profile for that actors look, attributes, and actions. So i think John Travolta is the only one capable of such a role. A perfect shoe! And you have to admit, who else could pull off a Danny in those days eh?

No one could have done it as well as John Travolta. He did everything in that film, dance, sing, act dramatically and comically and was drop dead gorgeous.

In those days likely no one. Maybe Jeff Conway who was in the movie and did play Danny on Broadway.
