i live in Canisteo new york and it is a rual area but the street lamps don't go out untill 12 and i going to get to see the meteor shower from my back yard

Unless you suffer from light pollution from the surrounding area then you should be able to see them.
The shower has already started, since the Earth is already on the path of the comet. However it will take several days to pass through the area, so if you dont see them tonight, try again tomorrow. Anyway you should start seeing them as soon as it gets dark. If you are in a city area you may not see much due to light pollution. If you can get out into the country or up a mountain that will be your best view =)

best time for viewing is 1-2 a.m. from what I've read.
