...it's a shame that when most people (present company NOT included) think of Italian westerns, they think of only the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood trilogy; there are so many others, which warrant equal praise, that are waiting to be discovered by the uninitiated masses...

...the "Django" series (and it's respective off-shoots and emulations)

......the "Sartana" series (...love Lee Van Cleef in THAT role, although Yul Brenner made an amiable substitute, in one of the films)...

...I could go on and on, but I would easily favor some substantial space on this particular question/answer forum...

I used to be chastised by my father, for not having an appreciatation for the western; of course, his day and age of the western falls amidst the era of Roy Rogers, Tom Mix and Hopalong Cassidy. These films were O.K., and all, but the Italian Spaghetti Western had considerably more acidic and viceral 'bite' than even the Western epics that featured the great John Wayne.

...I'll personally take the raw, acidic and viceral attitude of the Spaghetti western, over an epic tale exuded by the Duke, anytime...

I've seen every Clint Eastwood Sergio Leone film, as well as his own pseudo-spaghetti westerns, at least 15 times each. Probably more.

The storytelling is superior, as is that of the samurai films that often exchange remakes.

It happens that I just saw "Silverado" last night (a standard western, no pasta), and saw the director's interview where he was saying how the western had been in disfavor when he made the movie, and that he'd wanted to re-create the westerns he'd grown up with. He called it a "post-modern" western. It had a great cast, but I found it hollow, even dumb.

There is a gritty realism to Leone's work. If you're going to shoot, shoot --- don't talk! Eastwood kind of took the genre as far as he could go, with "Pale Rider" seeming to be the end of the line. Years later he found the true "post-modern" western, and gave us "Unforgiven" -- a very hard act to follow.
