Windows XP Upgrade Advisor
source: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx

The Upgrade Advisor is a tool that checks your system hardware and software to see if it is ready for upgrade to Windows XP. If you run Upgrade Advisor while you are connected to the Internet, and if your system needs updates that are available on the Windows Update Web site, Upgrade Advisor will find and install the updates for you.

Note We recommend running Upgrade Advisor while you are connected to the Internet. This way, Upgrade Advisor will get the latest data from Microsoft to ensure that you get the most current hardware and software compatibility report for your system. In addition to running Upgrade Advisor, we recommend that you search the Windows Catalog to find products compatible with Windows XP.

Note You may use Upgrade Advisor to check for upgrade eligibility and compatibility information for Windows XP Home Edition with the following exception:

It is not possible to upgrade from Windows NT® 4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Home Edition. See Step 1, below, for more information on upgrade paths.

What Do I Need to Know Before I Use Upgrade Advisor?
There are a few important things to note before you use Upgrade Advisor:
• Download size: The Upgrade Advisor download is large (approximately 50 megabytes), and is recommended only for download over a high-speed Internet connection, such as DSL or cable modem.
• Installation verbiage: The Upgrade Advisor is the same tool that is used to scan your system for compatibility issues before you install Windows XP. For that reason, some of the language in the tool may imply that you are actually installing Windows XP.
• Upgrade scenarios: The Upgrade Advisor checks for upgrade eligibility to Windows XP Professional only. Please use the link in Step 1 below to find out whether your version of Windows is eligible for upgrade.
• International versions: Upgrade Advisor is available only for U.S. versions of Windows. International Windows XP Web sites may be offering Upgrade Advisor in the future. Check back for links to international versions.

How Do I Use Upgrade Advisor?
It's a simple process:
1. Check for Upgrade Eligibility
"Upgrading from Previous Versions of Windows" tells you if your version of Windows can be upgraded to Windows XP.
2. Download the Upgrade Advisor
If your version is eligible for upgrade, download the Upgrade Advisor. You can choose to save the file to your hard disk and run it locally, or open it directly from the Web.

Tech guy? Default motherboard?
If you are getting RAM out of a Win 98 box - it most likely pc100 or 133. When XP came around DDR RAM was making its debut - the RAM more than likely will not be compatible.

be easier to answer if we knew some specs ie board ram type etc.. All ram will work with XP in a fashion the first thing that you need to decide is will the Board take that sort of ram, as well as support enough ram to run XP. 256 will make it work however 512mb is way better for the average system

actually it does not matter what type of ram you have ,it matters how much you have .256 is min for xp 512 is better and 1gig or better is best. the type and speed of the ram will determine the speed of your system.Remember that the newer Ram is Much faster than the older stuff and comes in larger standard amounts
