From movies like Jurassic Park, many people think that all the dinosaurs were enormous, invincible killing machines—humans are just too small, dumb, and weak to have lived during the time of the dinosaurs.
The truth is, humans live in a world that is still home to many incredible, large, and intimidating creatures. Large reptiles like the Komodo Dragon, anacondas, alligators, and crocodiles don’t keep man from flourishing on the earth.
Elephants can get up to 11 tons (22,000 lbs). An elephant can kill a man by stepping on him with one foot or by striking him with his powerful trunk. Yet, we have no problem taming these animals or even training them to do tricks in the circus. If man can work, play, and even go to battle on an elephant, why couldn’t man do similar things with certain dinosaurs. Yes, some of the sauropod dinosaurs grew four times larger than an elephant, but most dinosaurs were smaller than an elephant.
Killer whales (Orcas), are one of the oceans’ fiercest predators. They eat hundreds of thousands of pounds of mammal and fish meat every year. Seals, sea lions, walruses, otters, polar bears, and even moose have all been found in the stomachs of these creatures. But these are captured, tamed, and trained to do tricks.
If humans today can manipulate animals that are over 100 times their own size, why is it so difficult to believe that humans and dinosaurs once inhabited the earth at the same time?
Remember Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
When man and large animals get together, whose in trouble? Blue whales get much larger than any of the dinosaurs, and it’s the blue whale that has nearly been hunted to extinction in the past.
A lot of people get their ideas about how animals behaved from Hollywood fiction. But is Hollywood trying to tell an accurate story or an entertaining story? Now think if the dinosaurs had survived today, but the elephant had gone extinct. They might have made a movie like Jurassic Park about elephants. You see, if we didn’t know how elephants behaved, they might have been perceived as monsters. The movie might portray them running around stabbing people with their tusks. Because what else would tusks be used for except for stabbing prey? They were sharp and pointy. Well no—elephants are gentle animals; now you don’t want to make one mad, but they are not monsters, they are just animals that God created for our enjoyment. Dinosaurs are the same; they are not monsters, but just animals God created.
As Dr. Jason Lisle has said, “You can’t tell the behavior of an animal by its bones any more than you could tell the behavior of me from my bones. You can make a guess, but that’s all it is.”

If dinosaurs were still around today, I'm certain that many of them would be on the endangered species list because of human activity.

One of the biggest problems with dinosaurs existing in this day and age is whether human beings and dinosaurs are capable to live in harmony in the same environment. Dinosaurs are huge creatures towering many metres into the sky. They have small developed brains and rely a lot on instinct. Humans are completely opposite, as they are a lot smaller than dinosaurs with an average height of less than 2 metres, but their immense intellect has led them to become the top of the food chain.
65 million years is a very long time. If dinosaurs still existed today it is extremely likely that they have evolved into something more suitable and capable to survive in the present day environment.
One thing history of the planet has shown us is that size is not important. I believe that over the 65 million years of time, dinosaurs will gradually decrease their height. A more suitable maximum height would be around four or five metres tall. We can compare the long necked dinosaurs, which in some cases skyrocketed up to 30m tall, to giraffes.
Giraffes and long necked dinosaurs such as the brachiosaurus’ body structures are very similar. They both have the ability to reach food high up in trees using their long necks. But because the long necked dinosaurs’ size is gigantic, long necked dinosaurs also have evolved huge tails to balance their weight.
Because present day trees are not as tall as the trees in the Jurassic Period, dinosaurs do not need to be as large to reach their food in the trees. That is why if long necked dinosaurs existed in the modern era, being a ridiculous 30m would not be necessary because they would not need to reach as high to eat. Also being 30m tall also means that they would weigh many tonnes. This leads to having to consume a heap of food every day just to have sufficient energy to be able to survive. Also having long necks means that they will need extremely powerful hearts and a very complicated circulation system as it is very difficult for blood to travel vertical for long distances.
It is also believed that it was around the same time when the dinosaurs died out and mammals started to thrive. A lot of the smaller dinosaurs’ diet consisted of these smaller mammals. If dinosaurs didn’t die out, the consequences would lead to a dramatic decrease of mammals in the world’s ecosystem. It is even possible that mammals would not be given a good chance to evolve, or evolve into animals completely different than the animals we have nowadays.
Taking it logical, for mammals to be able to survive, they would need very different defence mechanisms. Dinosaurs have a very strong hide, and tough scaly scales for skin. It is unlikely that any animal in present day would be able to take down a towering Tyrannosaurus Rex, unless working in massive packs.
An example we can take from the Jurassic Period is raptors. Raptors have a huge, sharp and dangerous claw on each of their feet. And even then they need to hunt in packs of five or greater to take down dinosaurs a lot larger than them.
Using this example, if dinosaurs still roamed around today, claws would certainly have evolved onto humans. They are versatile, powerful and a great defensive tool.
Our hands would also have changed. The fragile skin layering we have would be useless for offensive or defensive manoeuvres against a mighty creature like the dinosaurs. I think our hands would have a thick protective hide made out of entwined coarse hair.
Another part of our body that would likely to change if dinosaurs still roamed around today would be our legs. Our legs would be a lot longer and more muscular so that we are able to take huge powerful leaps and bounds to escape predators if we came into danger.
As I’ve stated before, 65 million years is a long time. The small brains that dinosaurs wield are more than likely to evolve into something a lot larger and smarter.
In the movie Dinotopia, there was an island where dinosaurs didn’t die out and still remained. It showed that there were a few species of dinosaurs that were able to evolve enough to have a reasonable IQ and capable of many tasks such as speech, understanding, memory as well as showing a range of emotions including compassion.
But if dinosaurs were able to have such a long time to develop their brains, it would be possible that the dinosaur’s intellect would surpass us. Maybe they would be the ones to build houses and roads and we were the ones that were kept as interesting pets or enclosed us in zoos to be pointed and jeered at. But then again it is equally possible to be vice versa.
In conclusion, I kind of like the way the world is today, so I think it was a good thing that dinosaurs died out, otherwise our planet would be a very different place.
But hey, for all we know dinosaurs could still be roaming our rock in the solar system today! They might have evolved so much we don’t even recognise them. So be alert!
