They say it is gas but I like to think they are smiling cause they hear everyone going...so cute, how handsome, and all the kisses and mommy saying I love you every second and on and on. Also it take more muscles to frown so they are being lazy :)...thats a joke. It is really just all the gas coming out. How glamorous huh?

Many "experts" claim that a baby smiles during its sleep or even awake for the first time due to gas. Despite that i think babies do dream or have some sort of control of their facial muscles even at an very early age

Some say it is a muscle reflex, some say it is gas. During sleep, I would say maybe that is correct. Nobody knows for sure. Doctors have wondered for ages. I like to think that my babies (when they did this) were dreaming of being cozy and warm inside mommy or that they were dreaming of their mom/dads faces smiling at them. When mine were awake and did it, I swear they smiled cause they were just happy! :)

They aren't really smiles--they are just reflexes at that point. Babies experiment with all of their muscles and learn to control them differently--they smile in their sleep the same way they sometimes seem to "jump" or jerk in their sleep. Their body is experimenting.

I am going to be the one to dispel the whole "smiling is caused by gas" theory. I mean do you smile when you gassy?? No, i know i dont. True, responsive smiles happen at about 6 weeks. When my son smiled he was looking right at me and he was about 3 weeks old. I dunno. Some people may say gas, others its a reflex, me, i say if a child can hold their head up in the hospital, they can smile before 6 weeks!!!

I used to say it cause they are dreaming and because they are so young I would tell myself they are dreaming of being in the womb again or dreaming of breastfeeding cause that's all they know...but I am just guessing.

its just a reflex. "real", responsive smiles occur around 6 weeks.. before then, its a reflex.

they are just sooooo freaking happy to be in this world they can't contain it. that is why they smile in their sleep.
not really. gas; they couldn't let out in the womb because it would've been rude.
