I just saw this for the first time on the weekend (loved it, by the way).

I am a bit confused as to who killed Jack? Was it any of the character's in the story (Lurleen's father perhaps, or someone given the heads up by Alma?). Or am I way off track and it was just a random attack? If so, why didn't Lurleen give Ennis the proper version of events?

Thanks cowboys!

Jack's wife thinks he was just killed by a hit-and-run driver, since he was found bloodied by the road.

Ennis realizes - since he remembers the gay man beaten to death his father made him see as a child - that Jack was actually murdered. He was killed by men in the community - probably men he knew - for being a little too blatant about his sexuality.

In the short story, Ennis isn't sure how Jack died - until he hears that Jack had a new male friend he spent all his time with. The line in the story is something like "Then he knew - it was the tire iron." (Meaning, he'd been beaten to death.)

Yeah, like the last answer said.. in the story, he figured out that he had been killed on purpose.. The movie leaves the ending a bit ambiguous

in the beginning of the movie, one of them were talking about how some people found out this one guy was gay and they killed him. so i think when people started to find out more about it, the information got into the wrong hands and they killed him because some of the townsmen couldnt except him.
