the richer they are it seems the shallower they are!
just look at paris and her pals! with all the poverty in the world its disheartening to think their kind waste millions of dollars without a thought. and the media glorifies their actions, encouraging others to emulate these useless beings.
having said that, lets not fall into the 'america only' trap. every country has its own group of shallow people! they all should have to walk a few hundred miles in the shoes of the poor people of the world.
do you realize if you look at the ratio of donations versus wages, the working class, lower middle class, and working poor, donate more than the rich do? sure the rich can say we donate hundreds of thousands, but they make billions.
lets hope the tide will turn soon and we will become better people - sadly this will take hard work and too many people will say 'its just the way it is' or 'its too late to change things' or 'its our culture' or 'not my problem!'

Our lifestyle has been demeaned by the media. We are encouraged to turn to sex, alcohol, and other materialistic and ultimately worthless things whenever we have a problem. Due to the ample amounts of TV we watch, we no longer have the attention spans of our prior generations which affects our ability to listen and comprehend new information. Today's society likes to believe that it is thinking while in all reality, we do nothing of the sort. This is a consumer nation. Is it too late to change? It would take a lot of work and re-vamping of education and priorities but in the end I believe it would be worth it.

So long as more than 50% of people continue to do only the easy things, sputter obscene 4-letter words more than half the time, not listening to parents, teachers and elders, getting addicted to gaming, violence, alcohol and sex, and not getting a grip of some old-fashioned virtues or morals---the shallowness will continue, and the standards and popularity of many things will drop.

jeez...that's a huge question really!
i think there are many reason's but if i have to list them it's gonna be really difficult to not get depressed about it, it's never far from my mind anyway...every time i come to answers i'm reminded of just how shallow people here really are. and i'm not being sarcastic, unfortunately, i mean it.
and because of this predominate shallow aspect of our society, i think we're going to 'fiddle while rome burns', indeed we already are!
anyone willing to give some thoughtful consideration to the state of affairs here is usually called names by everyone else...they wouldn't want their pursuit of THINGS and some kind of imagined perfection to be interrupted by thoughts of reality or the facts....
americans have been far too spoiled for far too long and no longer THINK much about anything/anyone but ME,ME, and only those things pertaining to ME!...and this is too obvious to argue about, and i'm speaking in general terms here, i know there are exceptions, but they are becoming so fewer and so further between!
i do believe the list would take too long though, sadly
in my never to be humble opinion

This is the most capitalist of nations. So they are attracted to this place like moths to a flame. There is nothing wrong with capitalism, it has made a lot of things possible which otherwise would never have happened. However you have to take the good with the bad and accept those who exist purely for monetary/material reasons.

I think peer pressure and political correctness have combined to force people to lie about their real views. We have to be phony-baloney or be ostracized. A lot of the political-social views I see here on YA are straight from the mouths of political pundits.
