I am not a naturally a visual person ... I mean everybody is to some extent so I think with practice I should be able to get good at visualization. I have a really hard time picturing objects in my head although I have been practicing for the last week. I always see a black (blank) background whenever I try to visualize something and whenever I try to create a whole scene I am often zoomed in on the most important part that I am focusing on at the time. Any tips?

The left brain is vocal. The right brain is visual. Meditation is the practice of quieting the left brain (also called the conscious). And allowing the right brain (the subconscious) to work.
Awareness is the beginning. Simply knowing what is happening and trying to change is the first step. You have already begun. You can also read some on left/right brain studies. And find a meditation teacher to help you to still your mind.

I suggest this: sit in front of a blank wall, but with your eyes closed. Now picture your favorite color in a spot on the wall. Imagine that the color slowly spreads and fills the whole wall and then gets brighter and brighter.
That's all you do to begin with. Feel what that feels like- as the color spreads.
The next step would be to add imagined sound or smell, and to try it with different colors.
Don't try to visualize so much detail.
You can also sit with closed eyes and let your mind's eye create an image. Practice letting your mind create the images, before you try to tell your mind what to see. Hope this helps.

Thats kind of hard to do for someone like me because I am a very, very visual thinker. In fact, the word that has been used to describe it is a daydreamer. You are just a very concrete thinkerthething I would say to help you would be close your eyes and think about a situation and then think about how you would want it to be keep doing that and it might help.

Maybe you could look at one part of a room and observe what's there (like a black leather chair, a white rug and a wooden stool, etc.) and then close your eyes and try to picture that scene in your head, try to see where the objects were placed, what color they were and little details, like if they were fuzzy, or wooden, or leather, etc. Hopefully that will help

If what you are presenting, is actually occurring, then you must, see a Medical Doctor right away. He will direct you to the appropriate specialist.
It could only be two things. First would be the residual effect of alcohol/drugs, or neurological.
I know of no psychological problem, that would cause this to occur.

You need help in spacial thinking. Vizualization is the same area artists and writers use. Maybe that part of your brain is blocked.
