We stage garage sales often.Heres some input on them.
Buy those bright neon colored posterboards from a department store school or art section,BLACK magic markers and a few wooden stakes.(or make them from scrap wood.)Decide your dates EX:(written BOLDLY with at least 3inch letters(so cars can read them easily from the road)

Write (example GARAGE SALE FRI 17th-SAT 18th 8-4
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.(Even if you actually DONT have something for everyone,at least you can get them TO your driveway, and get out of their car to browse.

Staple the finished written garage sale signs to the wood stakes and post them at the nearest main intersection,(dont forget to put your address on the sign) in the ground near a stop sign or stop signal.Post another one at the end of your block, another at the edge of you driveway, and a few more at busy intersections.Post the sign a few days prior to your 'BIG EVENT.You could even run a 2 day ad in your local paper.

The key is to 'lure the 'perspective garage sailor' to your driveway.Serving cold bottled ice water is always a freindly means of doing business.(offer them free to your customers AS THEY GET OUT OF THIER VEHICLE!!(Its good p.r. and possibly gets your customers to feel obligated to buy.

Good luck, and remember to be yourself(s) greet your customers warmly and negotiate prices.(which you have already stuck on each item with those round neon stickers you can buy from Office Depot)

The biggest thing to get people to your garage is to be sure the signs can be read easily as people drive by. Make them big and bold using colorful posterboard and black markers. All the signs really have to say is SALE, your address, and the times.

Unless you have an idea of what things are reasonably worth, do not put a price on them. It saves time and worry.
Simply make a few signs that say, "Make me an offer I cannot refuse." When customers ask "How much for this?", you just repeat "Make me an offer." Most of your customers will probably offer slightly less than what they saw elsewhere, but more than you might have asked. You can always counter a lowball offer, and point out why the item is worth more. This method leaves everyone happy, feeling they got a good deal. Chances are you will take in more than you expected.

Good luck with your sale.

Advertise in the local paper, and put up signs in the grocery store if they have a bulletin board.

A good idea is to go around the neighborhood and see if there is enough interest in having a neighborhood yard sale. That will attract a bunch of people since they know that they'll be plenty of yard sales and they can shop around.

We are lucky enough to have a Realtor sponsor the event every year. The cost to her is minimal and she gets a lot of publicity out of it. check if you have any Realtors in the neighborhood.

As for pricing, it would help to take a few trips to other sales and see what the prices are for similar items. Books, I think go for 50 cents to a dollar for hardbacks. The later in the day the cheaper it gets.

Don't put clothes in the front, people know that there are clothes at every yard sale, put the big stuff in the front.

Hang clothes and have them organized. No one wants to dig through stuff.

Price everything. No one wants to keep asking the person in charge prices, and if they are busy, I will just leave.

Books movies and clothes, in general are 1/4 of the price you would pay in a store. If they are so old that they are no longer in the stores, then less than a $1.

Put signs up and advertise in the newspaper

i'm an house supervisor and function held 2 backyard revenues in my complicated. There are no rules according to say, purely ensure you do not bypass away a large number once you close up down. placed your sale the place there is adequate and secure parking remote from assigned parking. the suitable way is get as many residences in touch as available then placed an advert interior the paper as a community sale. That way you will get a ton of folk. yet do ask your supervisor first as a courtesy. according to risk the chief can assist plan a community sale. one ingredient, in case you do a community sale, verify firsthand that that's understood you will not guy somebody else's table. What a nightmare which would be!! good success!

big signs, bright clours, when ppl are driving they dont wanna read lots in one go, just put a heading saying "garage sale" then put down a short direction with arrows, maybe advertise in the local paper, and put signs up with CHEAP prices. the idea of a garage sale is to sell off stuff u dont need at bargain prices. depending on the books and toys i find most things range from 50 cents to 10 bucks (australian dollars), but really the best selling point is a haggler, if ur willing to say, its 2 dollars but ill give it to ya for 1 dollar ppl will think bargin and buy it.

First make the signs easy to read from your car with the house number and street and an arrow pointing to the direction. Use card board and spray paint it white and write with red and/or blue paint. Separate the stuff you want a firm price on from the stuff that has to go, and just sell the stuff. Learn the art of dickering. such as, If they say, That's to much, then ask them what would they give you for it. work with them and don't give the impression that you are stingy. Sell the stuff and have fun, and don't worry about loosing money. just have fun.

Originally garage sales were to get rid of unwanted junk and it was priced to get rid of it. Today, more and more people who hold garage sales price their stuff so high they never seem to rid themselves of it and end up accumulating more. So for you to have a sale that draws people you need signs that state that all prices are negotiable for sale and everything must go! Have fun.
