What you are talking about is called lucid dreaming. I think, with practice, it is possible. Ever seen the movie Waking Life? After watching that, I was obsessed with lucid dreaming for a while. It's difficult though, and I'm not sure it makes for the most restful sleep. But, in your case, I guess it's better than nightmares.

I'm not sure, but you CAN wake yourself up from a bad dream by shaking yourself.
But maybe that's just me

it is to an extent. Think about what you want to dream about for as long as possible before you go to bed and odds are you will dream about that concept.

No ! You can only control them when you are NOT sleeping.
So take advantage of your waking moments and fantasize all you want about what you want.

there is a concept called Lucid Dreaming, in which you're supposed to know that you're dreaming while you're dreaming and then be able to control everything in your dream.
i've tried to do it before, but haven't ever succeeded.
i don't know if it's legit.

Yes you can control your dreams, how to was even in one of my cognitive psychology textbooks, but I do not remember how. I used to be able to do it, but I stopped doing it and I don't remember how to.
If you are near a college academic library, it will be in there somewhere, or talk to a professor of cognitive psychology.
