I have been really sad because my father is terminally ill. I cry so easily and I have been avoiding people because I don't want to cry in front of them.

hey there sweety I am so sorry about your dads illness, i lost my mum 8 weeks ago to terminal ms after suffering and battling for 14 years with her illness so i understand your grief and pain.
You do have to realise though sweety that what you are going thru is 100% normal and that your reactions and feelings are justified.
if you felt depressed like this for no apparent reason then i would suggest that their is an underlying problem , but if you have only been like this with your dads illness than its totally expected and acceptable.
i understand your pain and i wont lie things will get harder , but you will get thru this, its not easy and there is no time limit on grief, and what ever you do grieve your way and in your own time, dont ever deny yourself the process because your scared your going to upset others, if people are your friends they will understand ,although keep in mind loved ones and friends often find it hard to find the right words of comfort, and that can make them feel awkward, not because they dont care or understand but because they feel helpless in taking away your pain.
Dont push your friends away, let them know that if you need agood cry you will, and that there is no need for them to say or do anything except wait till your finished and maybe give you a hug.Dont be afraid to be who you are and show the emotions that are you.
as for herbal remedies , i hear valerian is a good alternative to mainstream drugs, for calming.
If you feel so sad to the point of wanting to hurt yourself etc then i urge you to go straight to a hospital.
I honesty hope and pray that god will give you the strength to get thru this difficult time in your life.
take care

First off, it's normal for you to be sad when something happens like this. The best thing you can do is cry it out. Find a shoulder to lean on. The best natural remedy for what you are going through is family and friends. That being said, you can take a fish oil supplement. It's good for all sorts of things but there are many studies that say that it helps with depression and mood. I take it every day!

I stole this answer from another forum, hope it helps :)

"Just a few herbal antidepressants include:

Borage, Catnip, Celery, Chamomile, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lemon Bergamot, Mugwort, Rose, Rose Geranium, Rosemary, Scullcap, St John?s Wort, Thyme, Valerian

Of these, I would NOT suggest you try St John's Wort. Aside from the fact that it is contraindicated for use in chronic or long-term depression, it is a herb which interferes with almost every other herb or conventional drug and has far too many side-effects for me to consider it safe....... "

Ginkgo Biloba or St John's Wart, it doesn't help extreme cases though, for some depression like possible loss I'd recommend talking to your friends and those who care about you a lot. Drugs aren't as good as hugs.

SAMe, St. John's Wort, and Kava all help with depression. St. John's Wort and Kava are herb extracts and SAMe is an amino acid.

Damiana, Lions tail.

They are euphorics not sedatives.

I dont think sedatives like st johns wort are good for depressions because they just make you numb instead of contributing to happyness.

Also, they react badly with many other things, especially anelgesics and alcohol.

My deepest sympathy to you. I think that your friends will embrace your reaction and will not think less of you. As for your question. St. John's Wort is proven to reduce anxiety. The taste is dreadful, even if swallowed in pill form.
