1929 - Stock Market Crash, beginning of the Great Depression
1932 - F. D. Roosevelt elected President, beating Hoover
1933 - FDR takes office, starts New Deal programs to fight the depression, such as the CCC, WPA, etc.
1935 - Social Security, federally financed retirement for all workers, begins
1941, December - US joins WWII after Japan bombs Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Europe with Hitler's Germany, and China with Japan, had been at war since 1939 and 1931, respectively.
1944, June - Normandy Invasion, commonly but erroneously called "D-Day", in which US and British (and Commonwealth) troops begin their ground campaign against Nazi-occupied Europe
1945, April - FDR dies, Truman becomes President
1945, April - United Nations founded
1945, May - Germany defeated.
1945, August - Japan defeated after two atomic bombs dropped, showing the Japanese the futility of continuing the war
1945-89 - Cold War, in which the US (and other Western countries) and USSR compete for the world's affections. US and "the West" ultimately wins
1950 - Korean War. Communist North Korea invades the south, is ultimately pushed back by UN troops led by the US
1952 - Eisenhower, war hero, becomes President
1953 - Korean War ends in stalemate
Mid-1950's - modern Civil Rights movement begins. Martin Luther King Jr works through passive resistance, as taught by Gandhi; simultaneously, Malcolm X, not happy with the quickness of King's results, urges more confrontational "resistance."
1957-1981 - Space Race, in which the US and the USSR compete to get a satellite into geosynchronous orbit (USSR wins), orbit a man (USSR wins), land on the moon (US wins), set up a "permanent" space station (USSR wins), invent and use a reusable space craft (US wins)
1960 - Kennedy elected
1962 - US troops sent to Vietnam to prop up a corrupt anti-communist government
1963 - Kennedy assassinated. Johnson accelerates US troop involvement in Vietnam.
1964 - Civil Rights Act.
1968 - Nixon elected President
1972 - during the Presidential campaign, Nixon's men play "dirty tricks" on Democratic opponents, beginning at the now-infamous Watergate hotel.
1973 - Nixon ultimately pulls US troops out of Vietnam. Also liberalizes US relations with USSR and Communist China.
1974 - Nixon resigns Presidency over White House complacency in Watergate affair
1976 - Jimmy Carter elected President
1979 - Iranian Revolution, hostage crisis in which American citzens in Teheran are held captive by Iranian terrorists. Carter doesn't do enough about it.
1980 - Reagan elected President. Hostages released on his inauguration day, January 1981.
1986 or so - SALT II talks severly limit nuclear arms on parts of both US and USSR.
1988 - Berlin Wall falls, signaling the end of Soviet Communism.
1988 - George H. W. Bush, Reagan's VP, becomes President
1989 - Major Wall Street crash, worst one since 1929
1980's and '90's - Savings and loans crises, in which speculators ruin lots of small people through bad investments
1991 - Bush I gets UN to sanction "counter-invasion" of Iraq, which had invaded neighboring Kuwait.
1992 - Bill Clinton elected President, re-elected 1996. Faced with a Republican congress, few of his reforms go unchallenged. Instead, Congress investigates Clinton's -pants. Clinton also supports UN intervention in the Balkans and Somalia, where civil wars rage
2000 - George W. Bush elected President by the Electoral College, although Al Gore won the popular vote.
2001, September - Al-Qaeda, an Islamic terrorist cell, hijacks four commercial aircraft and kills over 3,000. In retaliation, Bush II invades Iraq and deposes Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with the al-Qaeda attacks. At the same time, Bush invades Afghanistan and boots out the Taliban, the Islamic extremists who controlled that country and probably supported al-Qaeda.
2004 -- Bush II reelected somehow.
2007 -- War still going on somehow.

the Dust bowl starts in 1934, when over farming of land in the mid west is blown away literally after several years of drought and over working of land, this compounds greatly the closing of 10s of thousand of small family farms all over the mid west, and a mass migration to California for a time, it worsens the depression nationwide.

late 1930s the land starts to heal in the mid-west, the war will actually help the effort in rebuilding the farming infrastructure of the nation.

Dec 7th 1941 japanese forses bomb Pearl harbor Naval base, US enters WWII

1942 gas,food and textiles start being rationed by the Government, for stock-piling for military use in the war effort.

1942 entertainers, Hollywood actors and actresses give themselves over to the war effort to help in anyway possible to support the war effort, this has a major effect on public support and great morale for the troops serving all over the world.

the all automobile makers stop making new cars , they re-tool to make aircraft, tanks, jeeps trucks etc for war use, this is a decision on there own, and government buys all they manufacture.

6 June 1944 US troops invade Normandy, France

April 1945 Franklyn D roosevelt dies, after being elected to a fourth term as president, and serving for a little over 12 years.1946 war rationing official ends

8 April 1945 German surrenders YE day (victory Europe)

6 and 9 Aug 1945 two Atomic bombs dropped on Japan in hope of ending the war.

2 Sept 1945 Japan signs surrender VJ day, End of WWII

1946 automakers start making cars again, but wit hsame designs and left over parts from when they had stoppedin 1942.
1950 the first year of all new cars, new designs,parts engines etc start to come of the lines in Detroit.

1947 Televisions start appearing in American homes.
late 1940s the term "teenager" starts being used, not previous categorized from children in common usage.

1950 US troops under the UN start combat in Korea
th Senator Joseph McCarthy (D) from Minnesota starts the Communist trials to find subversive "Reds" in Us government, and the Entertainment business, hundreds black listed careers ruined.

1954 McCarthy trials come to an end.

1954 the Korea conflict comes to a cease fire, Still in effect today, no peace treaty signed

1955 first US "Jet" passenger service is started.

1955 President Eisenhower signs the bill that starts the Interstate highway system.

1955 Bill Haley and his comets have the first rock and roll hit song on the charts and it goes to number one for 8 weeks , "Rock around the clock".

1956 heavy weight boxer Rocky Marciano (Italian) is the first and only boxer to retire from the ring as a champion having never lost a proffesional prize fight, and winning everyone by a Knock-out.

1956 Elvis Presely has his first hit song, number ! " Hound
Dog".
1958 the Russians successfully launch "Sputnik" a sattilite into the earths orbit, this has a traumatizing effect on the American public with the "red" scare of communist power, the US starts a Space program in reply.

1958 Elvis is Drafted into the Army.

Let me think the Great Depression, the Prohibition was repealed, WWII, Korean War, Cold War started, McCarthyism, Buddy Holly died, thats pretty much all I can think of.
