The egg. Eggs predated chickens.
To Jonny Muzz: to state that evolution is "only" a theory is to misunderstand what a sceintific theory is. Science progresses by theories being modified, improved or replaced by other theories. So to state that in the past certain theories have been disproved says absolutely nothing about the theory of evolution. However you then contradict yourself by saying that evolution is unprovable. This is incorrect. Evolutionary theory makes certain predictions and if any of these predictions were shown to be false, this would throw the theory into question.

Either way you look at it, it is unprovable theory. Many people have mentioned the egg is first as a result of evolution, which again is only a theory. Many times throughout history there have been theories about things that have been proven to be totally incorrect (They thought the world was flat at one point). This is a question that really cannot be answered with fact and is merely personal opinions & beliefs.

The egg.
Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.
Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

In all cases the fried egg or omelet cooks faster than the baked or fried chicken, so the egg is served first.

It takes 2 to tango. You need a chicken and a rooster to make an egg. There fore the chicken and rooster came first.

Does it matter? Humans consume a lot of eggs and a lot of chickens..... I'll say the egg. Why? Because we eat it (usually) for breakfast and that is the first meal of the day for most of us. Chickens come later.

To me, such a question is BORING if you are a Christian. OF COURSE the chicken came first! God created the animals, plants, humans, ETC. AND put in place a series of ways that life could continue. Duh!
If you believe in macro evolution then this is one of the all-time stumpers. But even then, you'd HAVE to say that the chicken came first, right? I mean, little Chucky Darwin has things jumping species and all, but he doesn't have a lizard jumping to a chicken egg, does he? I dunno. He's a whack!
