It was so very tiny, just about the size of a broken shoe lace, charcoal colour with a tiny yellow or white spot on top just behind its head. It was on the bike trail in a park, eating ants and warming up in the sun

did not look like any ring around the head, it looked more like a spot, but then again, the snake was so small

I am just guessing, but I would say a juvenile milk snake.

So it was a spot on the back of it's head...not a ring around the neck?
if it was a ring...it would be a ring neck snake. But I have never seen a snake that just had one spot on it's head
