Water droplets in the air carry scents well, so the smell of rain anywhere is a combination of many things. Water molecules carry scents from such things as oils released from plants, other chemicals, and even spores from tiny bacteria, called "actinomycetes". The spores are only released with a good rain--usually after a drought. The desert has this condition after a storm.
When raindrops are in the air, most light is either reflected off of the drops or goes right through them. If the light enters at certain angles, the light enters the drop, is reflected inside, and then exits the drop. Entering and exiting the drop, the colors are separated. (umm..it's kinda rainbow)..
i don't exactly know, but I think the refraction of light by the raindrops caused it..

The smell, which I start to get around 5 minutes before heavy rain hits, is from up-draughts of air on the edges of the rain band/storm taking minute soil particles with it.
These circulate in with the rain and give that earthy smell.
That's why you also get it if heavy rain without a storm comes along, where there is no ozone being produced by electrical activity.

That smell that you believe has a fresh smell is wet dust commonly known as mud. The weird yellow look is caused by a gross diffusion of light because of all the clouds. Things look weird because there are few, if any shadows, because the light is being bounced around so much all objects are being lighted from all directions.

Yes I love that smell. I figure it's all the plant activity. They drink, they give off scent that mixes with water, etc.

I LOVE that smell; I LOVE it when it rains - it's so relaxing and rejuvenating...I love to walk in the woods and do a lot of my photography because everything is just so relaxed and natural after it rains.

Yes, isn't it wonderful? Nothing else smells like that. It's as good as the smell of fresh mowed grass. :)
