Because we haven't learned to accept and admire ourselves. We have no real self-confidence or pride in ourselves. So we become second-handers. We look to others for approval.
The one of the best days of my my life was when I left that behind.

Not eveyone is like that. For most, humans feel that they need to be accepted because they won't be alone, they will be involved and social with other people, and society tells them that they need to be accepted, and eveyone blindly follows, society tells people what they need to be happy. People can't be happy without society telling them to be. That's why there are medications to make people "normal".

Because it is a biological imprint... We biologically need to be part of something for more efficient survival of the species! humans are social animals!!! However, one must not generalize so much. We may feel a need for being accepted, but it is not a absolute requirement or the only condition for happiness...

because we are sociable animals, but also as we mature, while we still enjoy feeling accepted, we are more interested with being accepted by those like us, whether family or not , and we dont so much worry about those who are very different then us, as we have learned that differences are perfectly ok, and usually those extremely different, while remaining polite and civil, will not form close bonds nor even understand why the other person is the way they are

I also have lots of info in my blog to help fuel peoples imaginations to many possibilities that can be found only in the minds eye.
Along with lots of environmental info, amazing environmental pictures and videos (These videos show the beauty of this world and what life can be like if people take the time to appreciate life’s true beauty).
Let us all strive for a greener/brighter future by helping to create a solid foundation for future generations to build upon, so we can hand them a beautiful world, filled with never ending awe and wonders!!
Where peoples differences and uniqueness are accepted, where we all live as one, helping one another so that we can all play our own mysteriously beautiful melodies in the never ending, awe inspiring, song of life :-)
I truly have faith in humanity and believe that someday our lives and the world in which we live will truly be transformed for the better.

in Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid, we can see that we indeed need to feel sense of belongingness before we can have self-fulfillment. it is just the way life goes, we need people (society) and our environment to help us develop self-confidence and character.
