I've had so much trouble with the Internet that at times I feel like giving it up altogether. It's causing nothing but tears, frustration, anger at the people who are hacking into my computer.
I've only just had it rebooted and now it's started again!
I've got stronger protection on my computer, but still they get in!
My computer is my 'eye to the world' as because of health reasons I stay home. I used to love the computer, now since this has been happening it has really spoilt it. We only go on the Internet occassionally. I used to really enjoy Forwards, and Messengers and Fun Trivia to name a few. Now they have gone, to make me feel safer. I had all our email addresses tested and it wasn't coming from us.
I changed our name and company for our joint address, and now somehow they have one of my own email addresses and while doing emails they are breaking in and ads come through, then I lose the email altogether which I am working on. Can anything be done?
Sincere thanks
Mary

1. Make sure your firewall is turned on. XP and Vista both have firewalls with the Operating system.
If you want something stronger get Zone Alarm.
Next- Change your email address and quit using Outlook Express or even Thunderbird.
Use only the online email services like Yahoo.
It is real easy to set up a Yahoo email account and it is Free.
Do not respond to strange emails _ever_ 99% of them are scams.
DO not give out any personnel information on the NET - NEVER -
Turn off all programs that start when the computer starts except your anti virus, anti spyware and firewall programs.
(System Configuration Utility - Start up Tab) Start > Run > type MSCONFIG > ok)
Install anti virus program and at least two anti spyware programs.
AVG Free, Ad-aware 2007, Spybot Search and destroy.

Get your hard drive reformatted and start over. Best Buy's Geek Squad can do it, I think they may even make house calls if you are unable to leave your home. Then use Firefox as your browser. Do not use Internet Explorer and do not use Microsoft Outlook for e-mail. Just check your e-mail on Yahoo or whatever site you like to get e-mail at. Don't download games or click on any blinkers that promise that you've won a laptop, free lunch at Applebee's, whatever. Remember, the Internet is just like the real world - if it sounds to good to be true it PROBABLY IS! Don't download any "free" screensavers or wallpaper. Those are riddled with spyware and viruses.

I'm not sure exactly what you should do -- what's happening to cause you to think your computer is being hacked?
If you are really being hacked, to the point that people are manipulating what you see on screen, I'd recommend formatting your computer completely (Ask a tech-minded friend) and getting a new internet service provider. That should take care of any hacks that are on your computer.

Well, you can do one of three things. Your first choice is to stick with the computer you have now and reformat it. It will be a pain, but its basically like starting over with a new computer with out buying one. After that i suggest getting spy/ad/virus protection software and securing your network with WAP instead of WEP. Second choice is to get a computer with Mac/Linux distro on it. There are far less viruses for these two operating systems (OS). Lastly, you could hire someone to take care of the more tech-savvy jobs that you need to do. Hope this helps!

Things happens if you dont have a good AV, AS or
some sort of good security software insalled.
You might want to print this out for future use
and as well as read these sites so that you
know what to expect and know what to do with these.
Try these and see what they can do for you.
If you think that you have an infection try these
programs, ALL of them!
If you want to try different programs, try these
listed below under "DECENT Programs".
First and foremost, these are MY opinions and have
experienced several machines that had these on them.
Stop using the following software:
I have stopped using the listed programs due to
personal reasons and will NEVER use them again nor
install them
on a clients system(s).
-- AVG --
-- Ad Aware SE --
-- Spybot Search and Destroy --
-- Ewido --
-- McAfee --
-- Housecalls --
-- Trendmicro --
-- Panda --
-- Norton --
-- eTrust --
-- Kaspersky --
***** Disclaimer - I use these programs and have yet
found ANYTHING else that can touch what these programs
can do.
Decent programs to install and use :

Get a Mac. It's that simple. I've had my Mac for a year and an half, and I can honestly tell you that I've had no problems whatsoever with it from any viruses or spam. It's the best investment I've ever made.

I had the same problem. Then I got a Mac.
It's not a sales pitch, there just better computers for people who aren't tech-savy.
They don't get viruses, basic functions easily laid out, only one wire for cable, everything else is wireless, Mac customer service the best, and ooo yea, NO VIRUSES

either get a new computer, a new firewall and spam and hackware protectors, do not download foreign (or unknown) websites, or complain to the company. things can be done if firewalls and such do not work.

totally take everything off and install a form of unix. Unix software is much harder to hack into and harder to build viruses for.
