I have reset the modem, unplugged the wire, replaced the wire and renewed my IP... What's left? I am on windows XP home edition (if that makes a difference)

make sure the network card is enabled in the device manager.

try pinging the router or gateway listed at ipconfig using the dos prompt. if that works your network card is connected to the network.

next do the lights on the dsl/cable modem light green and have asynchronous transmission with the provider?

if so then try pinging a outside ip address like yahoo.com and if it says that unable to resolve host name, yours is either a modem problem or dns problem

try this and then let me know which one it is and i can tell you how to resolve it

Click on the little icon, of 2 screens, bottom right.
Click the support tab in the box that opens.
Click the Repair Connection button.

Mae sure your drivers are intalled for the Ethernet port.

could be a bad modem. call your internet provider and they can check it out

Is it a new router or did the router recently start messing up?
