I'm asking this question here because a lot of black people will see it. I live in Cobb County, GA but am moving back west soon. I am just curious and thinking about my future and where I will want to retire one day. I keep hearing good things about these two cities for blacks people. I just want to know the real deal and if black people enjoy living there. I already know the demographics. There are blacks there but not a majority like in Georgia and DC. Because of that, unfortunately, I have to say that I would think these cities are much safer too.

What is the good and the bad? I can handle rain and gray skies, so that is no problem. Do the cities look run-down or old? Or are they beautiful? Do different races of people there generally get along, or is there a lot of racial tension? Racism is something I want to avoid as much as possible, along with high crime.

Aviator,

I can tell that you really love Seatte, but you must realize that Seattle does not belong to you. It doesn't belong to any one group of people.

Here in the South, I am finding the same kind of bias aganst outsiders, especially in the job market. In Nevada, where I moved from six months ago, people resent the influx of Californians because Californians generally have the money to buy nice homes in Nevada.

I'm a decent black woman. I'm intelligent and attractive. I am single and childless. I'm not "ghetto" or confrontational. I'm not a problem person. I simply want a nice, less hectic, beautiful, safe place to move to one day. As an American with a father who served this country, I think I have that right, just as you do.

My cousin lives in Seattle, she says its a very beautiful city. They have more problems that are drug related than anything else up there, according to my cousin. She never mentioned anything about racial tension. Personally I think you should visit and see how you like it. Find out which areas are drug infested, those are the areas to keep away from when avoiding crime. Good luck on your search.

You say the rain and gray skys won't bother you. Just wait until you have weeks and weeks of it. Both cities are have some beautiful features, but I wouldn't buy either of them in a garage sale mostly because of the way they are laid out traffic wise and otherwise. From having been to each numerous times it was hard for me to get a sense of either city regarding run down vs.old vs new because everything seems so mingled and the trees hide everything. I do know there is a strong element of skin heads throughout the Pacific Northwest and that would be of concern to me - and I'm white. Good luck to you in whatever choice you may make!

Seattle is a great place. If you like hippies. The Pacific Northwest is almost all hippies. I don't know much about it. I've been to Seattle and Portland. Liked Seattle way more, beautiful out there. The city is very clean, and the mountains and forests are amazing.

I don't think there is much racism out there. But i could be wrong. but based on the type of people, and their laid back attitude I would think there is less out there than on the East coast.

Intangibles: Toss up, the two on the brink of snowboarding, trekking, and so on. i could probably %. Seattle given the determination of purely Seattle and Portland. I stay in the la section. Plus being closer to family.

You would have to go there in order to know that and just because a city is "good for black people" doesn't necessarily mean that it would be good for you, each individual is different

Seattle is the best place in the country. But don't move here. Everyone keeps moving here and we hate it. At first everyone from California started moving here and now they are ruining it.
