I was repairing some insulation in my basement and took down the insulation that had the dryer vent behind it. When I looked at it there were black/brown marks where the insulation backing was touching the dryer vent. This seemed like a fire hazard. What alternatives are there so I can still have my basement insulated but not cause a fire hazard with the dryer vent? FYI - the vent runs about 10ft between two floor joyces.

It is ok to put it near your vent, its not flamable. This burning mark is not actually caused by it getting hot, but from the warm metal against the chemical on the kraft paper(vapor barrior)Same thing you put around your hotwater heater, its all fine as I see this all the time. You can remove this backing if you watn. But Remember thought that alot of fires are caused by not cleaning your lint trap. Get a vent brush and clean your vent regularly.

Insulation Around Dryer Vent

Yes it's just fine to have insulation touching your dry exaust pipe. If and when it goes outside, insulation is the best thing to push in around it to seal the hole from letting in bugs and dirt and cold and hot. Someone said that the vent line gets really hot...well...if you can't touch it and hold your hand there for as long as you want, there's a problem with your dryer and you best get that looked at right away.

Fiberglass does not burn you can strip the paper backing off it and use it that way,but the paper backing serves as a vapor barrier. You probably can replace this barrier with some type of non flammable product I would check with an insulating company for an option or an entirely different product . Its only 10 feet it shouldn't be very expensive.

I think that the insulation should be fire proof, but better safe than sorry. Cut off a little piece and see if you can light it with a match in an ashtray and if not, it will be safe. If your dryer vent is metal, it will get scortching hot, but shouldnt be able to catch anything on fire. http://appliancequickfix.com/ has a lot
of information on dryers.

No, that is not the best place to put her. Mice, along with other rodents, are very prone to respiratory infections and they can easily get one if near any kind of draft. The vent could also make her too hot. Try finding a dry, quiet place like on the floor away from anything harmful or on a table.

Stick with metal pipe and tape each joint with mastic tape. You can Insulate around it with no problem. Make sure it is vented to the outside with a proper dryer cap.

The paper backing of the insulation is flame retardant.
It will scorch, but not support combustion.
If the scorching bothers you, you can strip the paper backing, leaving just the fiberglass in direct contact with the vent. Leave the vapor barrier, (Inner side covering), alone.
(Do wear a mask if you do this. - Fiberglass dust is nasty.)

I would use the vinyl dryer vent duct-work rather than the metal, then you won't have the problem of insulation burning.

I would not recommend you put the rat cage by the vent, because of the temperature changes, it is more prone to get sick, I would suggest placing it somewhere where there is no vent, or windows ( cold drafts) that could affect its habitat temperature.
