I believe that "social norms" in people are non-existant. Everyone is different and chooses or is socially wired to do things in certain ways. I think as long as the actions are not a sign of mental or physical illness, its normal.

Abiding by the law. Going to School. Working. Paying taxes. Things that you need to do in order to live, are social norms.

Just some things that come to mind regarding social norms in American society: don't stand too close to people in lines or the elevators (personal space); we shake hands, no cheek kissing; no staring or pointing; that's all I got right now.

Social norms are different for different societies. In Japan it is the norm to never wear shoes inside. . . but in other countries plenty of people feel comfortable wearing shoes inside. One person's list of norms is bound to be different to other peoples' lists.

There are some generic social norms. Emile Durkheim (sometimes called the father of sociology) did some interesting work relating to social norms. One key area that Durkheim was interested in was suicide. He came up with about 4 different types of suicide and the up shot of his research was that under certain conditions suicide was normal behaviour. Of course those conditions were rather extreme eg giving your life so a loved one can live, heroic acts on the battle feild, jumping from burning buildings - that sort of thing.
Sounds morbid - but suicide would seem to be a generic social norm for all societies ie all normal people will suicide when they find themselves in certain states but . . . um . . . probably not the answer you were looking for and certainly suicide is not on anyone's list of things to do everyday !

Depending on where you live… Watch a blank TV, cheer when your team scores. Ask a stranger for money. Get into elevator and stand facing backward, talk to people in elevator like you know them, push close door button. Stand too close to someone when talking to them, after eating onions or drinking coffee. Go to restaurant, pay with pennies. Eat with your hands in a restaurant. Wear clothes backwards, guys could wear girls garments, wear shoes on wrong feet, don't shower, girls shave legs in public bathroom, or brush your teeth in public bathroom, use bathroom with stall door open. farting, picking your nose, scratching body parts, same sex holding hands cutting in line at bank take groceries from other peoples shopping carts saying hello, genuine manners go to coffee shop and sit down with random people and talk to them about your health or sex life or do this in an office, act like you belong there and you know the people stand while eating in a restaurant, or eat on floor, or under the table. Pretend to be crazy, order food at a restaurant for you and your imaginary friend, talk to your friend, ask waitress for doggy bag for food your imaginary did not finish eating. walk around the mall with an open umbrella wear a sombrero have a picnic in the middle of the classroom Hug a stranger. Go to the beach in your winter clothes, play beach volley ball with an imaginary volley ball. Wear a wedding dress to someone else’s wedding.

Each culture has its own social norms.

In the white American society, courtesy is a norm. Admiration of success is a norm. Getting a good education is expected.

In the black community, good singing is a norm. Respect for elders is a norm. Athletic ability is admired also.

In California - well, better shut up now.
