Is it because in baseball, the home team bats second - in the bottom of the inning?

I would guess you put your finger on it. Baseball started the tradition of having the home team go last, and it was natural to pick that up in schedules. The other teams followed suit over the years.

The difference, of course, is that in America baseball was first among equals. Other sports have a longer tradition overseas.

I've always wondered that, too.
They always say "New York AT Los Angeles" (or whatever the team names are) whereas we say "Liverpool against Chelsea".
I've starred your question, I'd love to see if someone can come up with the right answer.
