Then when they see that I can't speak Spanish they're a bit puzzled. I don't know, I just don't understand why some people assume that I can speak Spanish. I live in northern NJ by the way.

I'm obviously not Hispanic. Why would I ask this question if I were? And I'm not insulted of course, just curious.

I'm guessing that whatever your ethnic background might actually be, that you're somewhat Hispanic in appearance (dark hair, not pale skinned, etc.).

Have you considered learning Spanish? Having a second language would be great. Why not one that folks are approaching you with already and one that will be an asset to you later in the working world?

Gosh, there are so many reasons why.

Are you Latina, even though you don't speak Spanish?

Were you in a Spanish section of town?

Maybe that person was desperate for someone to speak some Spanish to--in a country full of English?

In any case, I don't think it's insulting, if you're worried.

Are you Latino? Do you look Latino? Do you hang around a lot of people who speak Spanish, so others would assume you can, too? Do you live in an area with a high Spanish speaking population?

I have the same problem and I'm 3/4 German! It's because you have dark hair and brown eyes. People in this country just assume anyone with these generic traits are Hispanic.

That happened to me too. People talked to me in Spanish a few times. I think It's because you have a Hispanic / Latin appearance.

People can be pretty presumptious when it comes to certain cultures. Korean people would start talking to me in Korean, and I would be like what? And they would keep repeating sentences like I would get it after the 3rd try or something.

Just smile at them, nod, and walk away. =) Or just say "si" to everything. That might work too.

Maybe your ancestors came from the Spanish origin and you look like the Spaniards.Examine your face and body structure including the way you dressed yourself infront of the mirror if you really look like the Spaniards.
