A physical is a complete and thorough check up...inside and out. The site below outlines it pretty well.

It is a complete examination done routinely to spot problems before they become acute. It usually involves checking your temperature, your blood pressure, your pulse, your ears/nose/ throat, your heart sounds, your skin for precancerous lesions, your groin for hernias, your anus for occult blood, your heart with an EKG for irregular waves, and maybe your chest by x-ray. They are looking for obvious problems or ones known to have occurred in your medical history.

Typically it would include a urinalysis and some standard blood test. Depending on age and gender some more specialized tests would be done.

Anything that is a problem would be followed up by a specialist.
