You are using copyright protected material to attract people to your website - how would you feel if you could write a song and nobody paid for it?

Yes it is illegal, unless you obtain a license from the copyright holder.

(based on other answers) Just because a lot of people do it, does NOT make it legal, and others MAY have gotten a license to use the song like they are supposed to!

If it is illegal, then you'd have plenty of company crime-wise, but I can't imagine it is. Everybody streams songs on their websites. I can't see why Greenday (or whomever) would object. It's like free advertising for their song. If someone likes what they hear on your site, they could go to iTunes to buy it.

You are fine. You can do a stream. Tons of webpages do it. Just make sure you have a purchased copy of your song. Just in case they come looking. (most likely not going to happen)
