Some wrong info given to you:
CD-R is not "read only". You do not give up the ability to record again and again by using CD-R. Many "computer help" web sites keep giving out this type of bad info but it just isn't true. CD-R is only limited in that it cannot be erased (formatted). A CD-RW can be formatted to erase data. A CD-R burn session can be either closed at the end or left open so that you can burn more data onto it later. Note: This is adding more data but not erasing any data. All good burning applications (Windows will say "programs") give you the choice of burning a session (leaving the session open) or burning a disk (closing the session). Most CD drives will play open session CDs but some will not. If you have a modern drive, you can play open session CD-Rs so buy them to save money if you don't think you will need to erase anything later.

Buy a reputable brand - there are lots of cheap, noname, generic brands cd that you want to avoid - you wouldn't want to put your precious pictures on these. I have always use Verbatim gold cds for my photos. And try making TWO copies - they are not that expensive. But your pictures are irreplaceable.
Always VERIFY your data after each copying. And keep your archive cds in a cool, dark place away from the sun/dust/heat.

I recommend CD-RW so you can change them if you want to.
BETTER yet, IF you have a DVD writer is to use a DVD-/+RW, as you can get a whole lot more on 1 disc.
In either case you are making a 'data' disc. MOST newer players will handle either CD or DVD data discs, but some will not. Make whatever is compatible with your player.

Get CD-RW. does not matter what brand you buy. You can put any file on CD-RW because it is "read and write". With CD-R, it is read only. Once you burn on a CD-R, you can never add anything else to it.
