If you are unsure or hesitant to defrag the system manually, or do not want to be bothered, then install an automatic defragmenter. Diskeeper is an excellent utility. I use it, and it does a great job. When installing, merely make sure that the automatic defragmentation option is checked in the settings. You can also change other settings, schedule a defrag, manually defrag etc if you want.
Otherwise, just go by the automatic settings, and diskeeper will take care of the rest, automatically defragmenting whenever required without bothering you or slowing down the system. You can try it out for free it at http://www.diskeeper.com/downloads/downloads-r.asp

Click on start, then go up to programs to highlight, then to accessories to highlight, then to system tools, then click on defrag, Once there, click on degrag and let it run. Oh you might want to do it better in safe mode, when you start your computer, immediatley hit F8 that will get you to your safe mode, you might have to hit it twice

hit start; it will take awhile depending on how long it has been since you last defragged and what you have been doing on your computer.

Its something that keeps the drives running smoothly, else everytime you put in or removed data, the drive would look like a road with potholes. Everything responds slow and takes time to open. Best to prevent this disease than troubleshoot after its severe.
