I heard the term was recently coined to refer to snatching someone off the street and forcing them to withdraw money from the nearest ATM. I vaguely recall something about calling family and demanding some form of ransom immediately. I also recall hearing the victims are almost always killed even if the cooperate.

Steven F is and isn't right- the victims don't die more often than any other kind of kidnapping. But he did get the definition right- it's snatching someone off the street quickly, then taking them to their bank atm &/Or demanding a ransom to be paid immediately, instead of days later. The kidnappers usually ask for "smaller" ransoms that can be delivered immediately as opposed to large sums that take days to gather. The idea is to get the ransom and give back or kill the victim before the police can get involved, so it's a matter of hours, not days.
