First figure out what you want to delete and what you want to put aside in case you need it later.
For files you do not want anymore, you can just move the files to the recycle bin by clicking and dragging or using the del key.
For programs you do not want to keep, you can uninstall them through Add/Remove Programs int the Control Panel.
If you have things you want to put aside, for me it is desktop items, just create a new folder and name it something like unused items. Move anything you do not want in your main folders to this folder. You can then decide at a later date if you want to keep the files withoul having to search for them again.
It might be advisable to make subfolder with folder names that will let you know where it came from.
I use:
-Unused Desktop.
-Old data from My Documents
-Old downloaded Programs

Assuming you are using Windows, Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel is the best place to start. You should be able to uninstall anything you don't need from there.
On a Mac you should just be able to drag any unused or unwanted programs to the Trash.

i might not understand your question perfectly, but if there are files you don't need, right click on them and press delete. to actually get most of the space back on your hard drive, you will need to delete them from your recycling bin. Right click on it and press "empty recycling bin" Be careful when you do this, though...because i don't think there's an easy way to get them back.
