the battery positive is red and also usually marked with a + sign the negative is black and marked with a - sign, always disconnect at least one battery connector from the car when charging the battery otherwise it will possibly damage the alternator,if you have removed the battery from the car and are now unsure which terminal is which then look at them and the you will see the positive + terminal is bigger in diameter than the negative, also ensure before charging that the battery has enough distilled water in it,low levels of distilled water can reduce a bartteries ability to hold charge, most modern battery chargers have built in reverse polarity protection so it should trip out if wrongly connected where as the older chargers when connected wrong used to blow a fuse.you will need to charge it for a few hours before it will start your car, around 8 hours i would think for an average battery and charger, alternately you could get someone to push start you and then once the engine is running be careful not to stall it at junctions and drive for a few miles to charge it up.however you need to address the reason of why it is flat, unless it is flat from something that is obvious such as lights left on or radio etc left on,then you need to know whether it is a worn out battery a faulty alternator or a fault in the electrics draining it when they shouldnt.most battery stockists and many of the smaller garages will do a battery check for free as it only takes a few seconds, good luck.

Red is positive, black is negative, battery is marked with symbols near the posts. Always connect negative first on solid ground (car frame or engine block are best or the battery terminal itself, no paint, chrome, or aluminum). lights turn on easily but the starter needs a lot of juice, your battery needs time to charge up. If you have good strong lights but still get the click, click, click, you probably have a bad starter solenoid. most battery chargers have some sort of indicator to let you know if the battery is charged properly. Your negative battery post is (grounded) attached to the engine block, the engine block grounds to the car frame.

If you have a battery "charger" you should take the cables off (red positive, black negative) and charge your battery. If you cross the cables you face possibly ruining your battery and/or charger, so try to avoid that. The easiest way to jump your battery, is to hook jumper cables from your car to a running car. Let it charge like 5min., then start yours. It should start right up! Thanks

red in positive, black is negative,, only put clamps on battery when charging the battery, never start a car with the both clamps on battery, this practice has resulted in batteries expodling,, if you need to jump and start a dead car, just put the positive (red) clamp on the battery and the negitive (black) clamp on the engine block, in a safe place where the cable wont get got when the engine starts

sounds as if it is time for a new battery, or you can take it out and go to most auto part stores and they can put it on a charger for you, they will also test it to make sure there are no dead cells. as for the jumper cables, red is positive, black is ground(negative)

THE BATTERY IS STILL DEAD AND YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NEED TO SLOW CHARGE THIS BATTERY WITH A BATTERY CHARGER FOR NOW.
POSITIVE IS ALWAYS RED
NEGATIVE IS ALWAYS BLACK
WHEN YOU GET IT STARTED TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT SHOP AND NOT THE DEALER OR ANY OF THOSE CHAIN STORES AND HAVE THEM RUN A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL CHECK.
BATTERY WILL MOST LIKELY NEED TO BE REPLACED BUT THE ALTERNATOR IS QUESTIONABLE.
