Yes they can, if you value your cars duco, you best wash your car buy hand the old fashion way.
One time through the automatic car wash won’t do much damage but a car that goes through say once a week over a long period of time will find their paint start to deteriorate.
It’s the bristles of the large brushes that cause most of the damage. Soft to the touch its more so the speed in which they turn and pressure they put out that damage paint and even some warping to large panels like your hood and roof.
Best and old fashion way to protect your paint and panels is to wash with good quality soap with a large sponge and rinse and chamois dry...can’t beat it!

If it is a recent car then washing with a SOFT bristled brush shouldnt do much harm. On a side note if you really do want to take care of your paint job then wax it. It is the best thing you can do for your paintjob, it protects the paint from moisture and UV rays which causes fading and clear coat peeling. You will also find that it doesnt get as dirty in the rain.

Hand washing is still the best. ALL automatic washes and the power spray self washes do some damage, from leaving minor swirl and scratches to dulling the finish.

Do you HONESTLY believe that they'd still be in business IF the damaged vehicle finishes? Sure, accidents MAY happen (an antenna may be snapped off, a spoiler may be scratched, even wheel rims may be gouged) - but they're all rare instances. As far as "damage to the paint"? Nope, no way, no how! Good luck!

The ones that use rotating brushes certainly do, most new car washes use high pressure jets of water, these are fine.

No they will not harm as long as they are touchless and you are lower than the max height.
