A great gift would be money becuase you need lots of stuff in college, food (mac and cheese stuff like this), and things to keep them busy. You can get lots of stuff at kmart or any store pretty much.

When I went away to college, the best thing my dad gave me (besides the tuition money and a ride to school) was a hammer and a cigar box filled with tools (regular and phillips head screwdriver, a pair of pliers, picture hooks and hanging wire, etc.) As a 17 yo girl, I had not had reason to acquire such things. I used my tools more often than I ever would have guessed and took them with me when I went to graduate school at another college. I took that box with me again and used them extensively when I moved into my first apartment, and eventually, dad gave me a cordless drill which helped me put up my own shelves in an apt. when I was 35. I eventually told dad that if he wanted to give me a birthday gift one year, that I would really like to have a tool box since the cigar box was wearing out and the hammer never had fit into it. Nowadays, I see fully stocked PINK tool boxes being advertised for sale so if you are wanting to get a college bound girl a gift, I strongly suggest it, and add in some picture hanging supplies, screws and nails.

I don't know what kind of budget you are on but a friend of mine just sent her daughter away to college and we had a going away party, some people gave her a small dorm size refrigerator, travel bags, Comforter and sheet sets, towels, student planners and organizers, my daughter who is sixteen thought it would be a good idea to get her a small trash can and filled it with shower products, toothpaste, shower shoes, and even some antibacterial gel. Of course they can always use extra cash and gift cards too. Good Luck!

Money is always good. But perhaps you want to direct it so it's not wasted and forgotten. How about some gift cards: for phone, for Staples, for a book store, for a restaurant near campus so they can go for a treat.
