It would be better to buy pre-killed fozen rats for your snake. You then wouldn't have to have housing for live rats, food, and worry about how to kill them. Any kind of gas but co2 would still be in the rat and possibly effect the snake. Go to www.themousefactory.com for great pricing, or visit your local pet store. Live feeding isn't a good idea. Many a snake has been killed by it's food.

What you could do is put them in an escape proof container and put the container in the freezer. It's not painful for the rats, its like going to sleep. It happens quickly. Its like when it's really cold in a school classroom and it makes you sleepy. It's pretty much the same thing. The only difference is, they don't wake up from it.

I'd rather kill the snake, but if you absolutely must have a snake and raise helpless animals to feed it, you can put them in a container with dry ice. The fumes from the ice will kill them. Feeding snakes dead food is much, much more humane than feeding live food. It's also safer for the snake.

Here's some good info:
http://www.anapsid.org/prekill.html
Most experts are now recommending frozen/thawed. It eliminates the chance of the prey injuring the snake, and freezing kills the parasites the rodents carry, which is healthier for the snake. Look into it! :)

yes i think a co2 chamber is the best way to go. The herpetologist i know uses one to feed his snakes, he also supplies the local pet store with some so yeah i would say this is efficient for really big jobs.

I don't think there is a sleeping gas you can use. But if you just breed them and keep them all in a cage you can feed them to your snake live.

Co2 is what most breeders use to kill their rats/mice.
