Well to put it basically, bitrate is the amount of memory used per second or so i think. Basically, the bigger the bitrate, the better the quality.

However, a much more stress free solution for getting videos on to any device, or converted into a more manageable file format, just go to vixy.net. You paste the url of the video you want, choose the file format you want (so choose the one that can be played on you mp4 player), they it will convert and give you the file to download.

This site is soooo useful. Its online so it doesnt clog your system up. it's free, unlike many converters, and its stress free most of the time. Give it a try.

A bit rate is the speed at which data is delivered for conversion to images, sound etc. Common bit rates for audio are 22,500 bits per second, 44,000, and up to 128,000. With a low bit rate, high frequency sounds can not be coded so they are lost - low bit rates are used for voices talking (not singing) and take less space.
My first guess is that the bit rate in the file was set for PAL (50 hertz power) and it doesn't work with SECAM (60 Hz) or vice versa. Otherwise it may just have been recorded at a rate your program does not accept.

there is no such thing as a bitrate
the term refers to the number of data bits per second that needs to be processed
