First of all, Verizon does not set any security options on the equipment that they provide. It is the customer's responsibility to set that up, so your fiancee's step-father probably set it up and doesn't want you to use it and lied to you.

Press and hold the reset button on the back of the device for about 30 seconds, and then follow the user manual instructions to set it up as you like. If you don't have the user manual, you can download them from Verizon or call Verizon customer service to have them lead you through the process.

If you are trying to get internet from the router you will need the encription key in order to recieve internet on that computer. The encription key should have been given to you at the time the router was locked. If that doesnt help, go to the support site that router was made by.
