I have played WOW and thought it was pretty fun but the subrsiption fee ruined it. I heard guild wars didnt have one and I wanted to check it out. Is it worth buying it?

Also what is Guild Wars factions, night fall and eye of the north? Are they like expansions or something. If I get one which should I get.

I'm going to answer the second question first. There are three different Guild Wars currently out. Guild Wars: Prophecies (sometimes just Guild Wars), Guild Wars: Factions, and Guild Wars: Nightfall. Each of those is a stand alone game; you only need one of them to play. It is possible to play Guild Wars with just Nightfall for instance, and not the other two. (There is additional unlocked content if you own more than one of the games on the same account.)

Eye of the North is a true expansion pack. You must own Prophecies, Nightfall, or Factions to play it. It supposed to help transition over to Guild Wars 2, which people guess is going to come out late 2008 or early 2009.

Here are some details about the three games so you can see the differences.

Prophecies:
-Generic RPG theme.
-The original game.
-No unique classes.
-A long story quest.
-Most of your skills can be earned through quests.

Factions:
-Asian themed.
-The most PVP content.
-Has the Ritualist and Assassin classes.
-Reaches the level cap faster than Prophecies

Nightfall:
-Egyptian theme
-The most PVE content.
-Heroes (customizable minions) all the games have minions, but heroes can be customized and controlled.
-You can reach the level cap VERY quickly.
-Most skills are purchased

Of the three I recommend Nightfall first. It’s probably the easiest of the three to play, and definitely the easiest to solo through thanks to heroes.

As for comparing it to WoW; that is actually very hard to do. I prefer the pace of things much more in GWs than I do in WoW. I think GW is a lot more action oriented.

Guild Wars:
+Lower level cap
+No monthly fee
+More balanced PVP
+More flexible characters
+More flexible character creation
+More skills (total, a character ca have hundreds of skills, but can only use 8 at a time.)
+Instanced areas
+Computerized minions to fill out a party.
+Special guild hangout
-Fewer items
-Fewer quests
-No heal potions
-Fewer armor designs (one game has a max of 8 styles with 4 of them being prestige versions. But you can customize your armor color.)
-No inbuilt mail system, you can only talk to and trade with characters online.
-Instanced areas
-No real craft system
-No auction house
-Lower level cap

World of Warcraft
+Lots more items and armor looks
+Can equip many different skills
+Higher level cap
+More quests (but many are less rewarding)
+Can choose a race
+More PVE content
+Larger world
+Craft system
+Mail and the auction house
+More players
-Can't trade between players on different servers
-PVP is dominated by people with superior equipment
-No guild halls
-Fewer character customization options (which are largely meaningless after you can wear helmets anyway.)
-Monthly Fee
-Since you can only have one class at a time, equipment and level is all that keeps characters of the same class from being more or less identical.
-Lots of spammers and gold farmers

Unless you absolutely love PVP, you are probably not going to find the overall experience in Guild Wars as enjoyable as the one you would in WoW.

The game is fairly short in the leveling process, and doesn't have a ton of content like WoW. The graphics are sub-par, and the amount of items are limited. The quests are few and far between, and are definitely not as involved as the ones in WoW.

Save your money.

The other Guild Wars titles, are expansions.

You will enjoy Guild Wars. Each game is stand-alone (except the upcoming Eye of the North) so you can buy whichever one appeals to you. (I'd recommend the first one, Prophecies).

There is always plenty to do in GW and you won't bet bored with it any time soon, whether you enjoy PvE or PvP.
