If your truck requires premium fuel it is because it has increased compression in the combustion chamber. This is usually from after market "add ons" If you run from 8 - 9.5 to one compression regular is ok, Any higher compression and you want to run at least 91 octane. If you don't you'll get a knock in the motor eventually.

Yes. Spark knock, or pre-ignition can result from not using the right fuel, this can lead to engine failure. What I do is I will add enough octane booster to make up the difference. this allows me to run the cheaper fuel. But I don't practice this is the heat of the summer, usually I only do it in the winter months.
