depending on the area you live( cost of living ) here in the south $70.0 an hour plus the cost of the freon per pound which can be $7 - $10 dollars a pound.... so unless you have a sizable leak it should cost under $100.0

If your unit has a freon leak, I believe that the repairman will be not allowed to add anymore freon until the leak has been fixed. Those are the new rules now.
whether or not they will adhere to these rules, is another thing. I understand that the penalities are getting quite severe for releasing hydrocarbons into the air.
should the guy/gal be willing to add freon, the cost for the service call will be around 70-75 for the call. Then add the cost of the freon to the bill and any other parts that are needed. So look for something around 100-150.

fordman is right.
A reputable AC company has to fix the leak first.
And they usually have to replace the filter dryer when they do so. Bi-flow filter dryers are best.
Then a good company or AC tech will purge the line with nitrogen, and pressure test the line before adding Freon.
You just cant add Freon with out cleaning the line after fixing the leak, because not cleaning the line will make for more problems later.
Regardless, your looking at $200 and up for such a service to do the job right.
If your AC is over 15 years old you may want to think about upgrading to a Puron system.

You only need freon if you have a freon leak. In most cases the thermostat has been set too low( during this hot weather) and the inside( evaporator coil) has frozen up and air will not pass thru a frozen coil. If there is ice on the Larger( suction) line going to the outside condensing unit and the inside coil; it has been set to low!( thermostat).. turn off 3-4 hours and defrost, turn back on and set at no lower than 70 degree's. Check your air filter also and change if dirty. good luck, stay cool!

If all they do is add a little freon and clean it, it ought to be about 100 bucks or less.

REFRIGERATION ENGINEER HERE R22 OUTLAWED SOON YOU NEED TO REPAIR THE LEAK FIRST BEFORE RECHARGING ANY GAS. CONSIDER CHANGING UNIT TO OZONE FRIENDLY REFRIGERANT AS THE COST OF REPAIR AND RECHARGE WILL BE EXPENSIVE. IM IN THE UK BUT IM SURE ITS THE SAME IN USA
