I was watching "Ice Truckers" and it seems like there is just a bunch of diamond mines. Do you know?

Based under the international law, no country owns the North Pole or the region of the Arctic Ocean surrounding it yet. The five surrounding Arctic states, Russia, the United States, Canada, Norway and Denmark (via Greenland), are limited to a 370 kilometre (200 nautical mile) economic zone around their coasts.

Upon ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country has ten years to make claims to extend its 200 mile zone. Due to this Norway (ratified the convention in 1996), Russia (ratified in 1997), Canada (ratified in 2003) and Denmark (ratified in 2004) launched projects to base claims, that certain Arctic sectors should belong to their territories.

The diamond mine in the series "Ice Truckers" is in northern Canada (the Northwest Territory to be precise). The "Arctic" is the frozen ocean at the north pole, and as open ocean is not "owned" by anyone (even though it is frozen solid most of the year).

The Arctic doesn't belong to anyone.. but what i don't get is why in all the atlases I've looked through the Arctic is part of Canada!! So why the big bang all of a sudden to get claims to it?? I think we should all be helping to preserve the Arctic.. not fight over WHO owns it!!

Well, a few days ago, Russia claimed the north pole region based on its connection by an undersea mountain range-thingy. But I think a few other countries have put in their claims too.
