You're 17 and you care about politics? You're going to have a great future! Keep yourself informed! You hit the nail on the head. Politicians ONLY concern is getting re-elected at any costs. There is not ONE politician today that will fall on his sword for a worthy cause that he himself believes in, if he thinks it MAY cost him the election. Congress is so out of touch with mainstream America they might as well be from Mars.
None of the great moral issues of the day have ever been voted on by the people. The elitists have used the courts to ram a new America down our throats. If our elected officials really want to represent our values, why don’t they let us determine what those values are? How about letting the people vote on:
Gay "marriage"
Posting the 10 Commandments in government buildings
Prayer in schools
Teaching of creationism
Affirmative action
Killing of unborn children
Government seizure of private property
Burning the American flag
Illegal immigration
Child porn
If these issues were put up for a vote, I would guarantee "we"--mainstream America--would be on the same side.
Can America be saved? I don’t know. But this idea that ALL Republicans have family values, ALL Democrats are anti-God, and our elected officials are looking out for us has gotten us where we are today.

With the ratification of the 17TH Amendment in 1913 Senators could then stand for election. Up till then they were appointed by the Representatives in the House. The Governor of each state could remove a senator that did not follow the will of the people. What we need my young friend is term limits. Two in the House, one in the Senate. I served two hitches in the Navy in the 60's. I then spent my life in law enforcement, 30 years. Ted Kennedy was in the Senate when I was in high school and his big fat rump is still sitting there. They should not get big retirements when the poor working slobs out here are regulated to a Social Security check. Here's how that works also. My mother passed away last Sept 30TH. 12 hours before the first of the month. My family and I had to return her whole months retirement check. I sent a group letter to our Sen. Boxer. My neighbors and I had protested this unfair law. We all got a Bush bashing letter in return. She did not address the subject matter of our letter and we were all audited by the I.R.S. a week later. When do you think the last time a sitting Senator was audited by the IRS. Ted Kennedy has their family trust funds in Fiji to avoid paying U.S. taxes. We pass the torch, make your voice heard.

It's all about getting votes and staying in office so they can get the big income and fringe benefits at the expense of the taxpayer. It has NOTHING at all to do with representing a constituency.
So to get as many votes as possible they try to be on all sides of an issue at the same time; for the war, against the war, bring the troops home, send more troops, all of this at the same time. This is why they seem to flip flop back and forth almost daily. Now the new thing is trying to get the votes of all the illegals, that's why you had the STUPID idea of Guest Workers, which was the first step towards Guest Voters.
The current crop of politicians is only interest in one thing: me me me me me me me, and everything else can go to hell.

Fair evaluation. Except you're placing too much good will into past politicians.
In the past, this country actually stood together in times of trouble. Made the politicians more popular. Now politicians and the media pit one segment of the country against another. Doesn't matter if its class envy, Iraq, the war on terror, or the great strawberry debate.

They do suck - mostly because they are pathologic liars. You can't please everybody all the time. In politics decisions must be made even with a veto threat. Politicians have to know that the people want our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan home now yet they fail to get a bill passed - even if it requires a veto override of the chimp.

yes! They're uncharasmatic and inspiring. I dont know if people long ago had lower IQs than us (probably) but it seems that they didnt know that we were being led like sheep by old white men and never once did a president sacrifice his office for the good of the nation. That only happens in parliamentary democracies my dear

The types of politicians you want in office are the types that get their head blown off by a loony militant.

As frustrating as it seems, these so called leaders are no worse than what we have had for the past 50 years. The only thing that is different is communications, now you know when they screw up, years ago it wasn't reported............secrets were kept better

Many teenagers could run the country better than how it is being run right now. There are many teenagers who are smarter and more honest than the jokes who are in government right now. Of course, some politicians are nice and intelligent people, but of course, not all of them are like that.
